COLONIE ADVISORY COUNCIL and IDA SURVEY TOWN’S

Newtonville, NY ­ In conjunction with the Colonie Industrial Development Agency (IDA), the Colonie Small Business Advisory Council has launched a new survey designed to help strengthen the climate for small businesses in the Town of Colonie.

“Small business is the true backbone of our economy,” said Town Supervisor Paula A. Mahan in announcing the survey. “A great deal of attention in economic development is focused on big business, but it is small businesses that creates two out of every three new jobs and produces nearly 40 percent of the gross national product.”

The voluntary survey asks Colonie’s small businesses owners about the nature and history of their businesses, their experience conducting business with the Town of Colonie and their need for and use of Town services.

Among specific questions are those asking for information on the handling of applications submitted to the Town, the resources business owners would like the Town to make available and suggestions helpful to those wishing to open new businesses in Colonie.

Formed by Supervisor Mahan and first meeting in April 2009, the Small Business Advisory Council’s primary role is to act as a liaison to the Town government, providing input and feedback on the practices and policies of the Town. The Council is also charged with compiling information on the Town’s small businesses, disseminating information to and from the small business community, and providing support and advice to aspiring small business owners.

Chaired by Diane Conroy-LaCivita, a small business owner and former Town employee, the Council currently has 38 members from Colonie’s small business community.

Said Conroy-LaCivita, “In these tough economic times, it is extremely important that small businesses be given an opportunity to be heard. Realizing how rewarding, yet challenging it is to start and nurture a business, the proactive approach the Town of Colonie has taken in regards to securing feedback from small businesses through the creation of the Small Business Advisory Council should be commended. The Council is committed and looks forward to continuing its mission.”
